1.   Self-Employed Person

To qualify as a self-employed person, the candidate must have significant agricultural, artistic, or athletic experience that will allow him to be successfully self-employed in Canada and make a positive contribution to his field of expertise. The candidate must also be capable of supporting himself and any dependents with self-employed income.

Self-employed person must have relevant experience of at least 2 years in specific economic activities such as cultural activities and athletics at a world-class level, and also buying and managing a farm.

2.   Start-up Visa

First step in applying for start-up visa is to come up with a unique business proposal in order to to secure funding, guidance and support from a designated Canadian investment organization.

Through the start-up visa, Canada can target entrepreneurs who have the potential to build innovative companies that can compete on a global scale and create jobs.

To be eligible, applicants for a start-up visa must meet the following requirements:

  • Meet minimum language requirements in English or French (CLB 5 in all categories)
  • Have sufficient funds to settle in Canada
  • Plan to settle in a province other than the Province of Quebec
  • Pass Canadian security and medical clearances
  • Prove your business is supported through a designated organization
  • Meet the ownership requirements for a qualifying business

CIC may request an independent peer review to ensure that due diligence was performed by the designated organization that issued the Letter of Support.

3.   Provincial Nominee Program – Business Immigration

Canada’s provinces offer a range of entrepreneur categories within their Provincial Nominee Programs. Through one of these categories, immigrant entrepreneurs can settle in a specific province.

4.   Quebec Business Immigration Programs

Quebec is offering three business categories for people who want to establish or acquire a business in Canada.

  • Quebec Investor Program: To qualify as an investor, an individual must have a net worth of at least C$1.6 million obtained legally, have managerial experience and be willing to make a government-secured investment of CAN$800,000.
  • Quebec Entrepreneur Program: To qualify as an entrepreneur, an individual must have a net worth of at least C$300,000 legally obtained, have managerial experience in a business that they either owned or controlled, and be willing and able to establish or acquire an agricultural, commercial or industrial business in Quebec where the candidate holds at least 25% of the capital equity with a value of at least C$100,000 and which will employ a Québec resident other than accompanying family members.
  • Quebec Self-Employed Person Program: To qualify as a Self-Employed person, an individual must have a net worth of at least C$100,000, come to Quebec to be self-employed by practicing his/her own profession or trade, and have at least 2 years of experience as a self-employed worker.
