Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings prior to acquisition of new investments or restructurings and provides input on operational considerations
  • Reviews legal documents to verify that investments have been set up in the accounting system correctly and that complex transaction are accurately recorded
  • Verifies unit pricing for assigned pooled funds and segregated holdings at each month end within strict deadlines
  • Reviews and prepares annual valuations of the mortgage investments and/or external evaluators
  • Performs annual allocation of net income and net taxable capital gains in accordance with the Pooled Investment Portfolio Regulations
  • Completes assigned year-end financial statements, including financial instrument disclosures (and working paper files) in accordance with policies and established standards, as required by generally accepted reporting standards of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants
  • Completes assigned holding entity financial statements in accordance with established standards
  • Maintains financial controls and procedures to ensure all aspects of accounting, valuation and reporting meet established policies
  • Works on special projects relating to financial reporting and streamlining processes for operational efficiency
  • Recommends changes to controls where weaknesses are identified and ensures internal controls are adhered to for assigned functions
  • Responds to inquiries from corporation staff, clients and auditors
  • Provides training and assistance to other staff members as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Actively adheres to compliance and risk management policies, and participates in business continuity planning

Experience and Qualifications

  • A professional accounting designation (CPA, CA; CPA, CGA; CPA, CMA)
  • Three to five years accounting experience
  • Strong experience in investment accounting
  • A good understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, industry standard valuation techniques
  • Experience in accounting and financial reporting for complex investment structures
  • Up to date knowledge of changes in the investment industry and accounting and reporting practices for new investment instruments
  • Professional judgement and discretion
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • The ability to proactively look for ways to increase efficiencies in how work is performed
  • Current experience with Excel, Word and other software applications
  • Experience with Yardi ERP is an asset
  • Experience in valuation, financial reporting and real estate and/or mortgage investments is preferred
  • Knowledge of IFRS is an asset
