Visiting Australia for short time
Non-citizens transiting
Australia to another country or passing through Australia to join a ship as
crew must obtain a visa overseas before travelling to Australia.
The relevant visa is Transit
Visa (subclass 771), which is free of charge and allows the holder to enter
and remain in Australia for 72 hours.
Passengers from certain
countries (see below), and residents of Taiwan (other than those holding
Taiwan official and diplomatic passports) as well as residents of Hong Kong
(only those holding HK Special Administrative Region passports or British
National Overseas (BNO) passports) who intend to:
-
transit Australia by air within 8 hours of their
arrival; and
-
hold confirmed booking and documentation necessary to
enter the country of their destination
Some country citizen do not
need a transit visa, as they are deemed to hold a special purpose visa
provided they do not leave the airport transit lounge.

Medical Treatment
Two visas are available: visa subclass 675 is for
short-term visits for up to three months, and subclass 685 is for more than
three-month visits

Business visit
The
Business (Short Stay) visa (subclass 456) allows the bona fide
businessperson to make a short visit of up to three months to Australia to
conduct business – a conference, negotiation or an exploratory business
visit. A single entry or multiple-entry visa may be issued.
In many countries around the
world, you can now obtain your Business (Short Stay) visa the same time you
purchase your airline ticket. Just ask for a Business Electronic Travel
Authority (ETA) for Australia. Alternatively, you can lodge an application
form at any DIMA office.
